Host an International Student

Foreign Links Around the globe (FLAG) is a U.S.-based nonprofit student exchange organization.

There are six FLAG students seeking part-time and full-time host families in Muncie/Yorktown for the 2018-2019 school year. Part-time community host families assist the student with life locally while they reside in the dorms at The Indiana Academy, and also host the student on extended weekends and holidays. Full-time host families must live locally and will host the student in their home for the year.

I am always full of curiosity and it benefits me a lot in my studies. Among all the subjects in school, biology wins most of my attention. I like it so much that I decided to enroll in an honor class for preparation of my college study. I appreciate math and physics as well. I consider math to be a good way to improve intelligence and physics provides the most practical way to understand the world. Besides my academic performance, I have many good traits. I am kind-hearted and like to help other people. I am considerate and honest and always treat others well. Hence, it’s easy for me to make friends. I work as English teachers’ assistant, and I do volunteering service in school library. I love reading, it’s wonderful for me to stay in library to read what I want to read. I like watching movies and doing sports. One of favorite movies is Les Miserable. I love swimming very much. I am looking forward to participate in the exchange student program. I will do my best to adapt myself to the life in a high school and in your home. I would like to learn the American culture and customs from all of you. I want to share Chinese culture with all the family members, schoolmates, friends and local community. I also want to gain a better understanding of American culture and make some good friends.”

Olivia | Full-time Host Family

Country: China
Gender: Female
Grade: Junior
Interests: travel, tennis, running, swimming, music, orchestra, philosophy

Olivia writes: “My English name is Olivia and I am the only child in my family. My parents love to travel very much so that they have taken me abroad almost every year since I am a little girl. Now, I have been to twenty counties, being able to have seen different people and cultures and have valuable experiences. The various experiences also make me better at communicating with others and deal with different troubles on my own since my parents could not speak English – I became their interpreter and tour guide. Through traveling, my mind opened up to the world and I always wanted to learn from different cultures and people, that is one of the reasons why I would like to study as a exchange student in the United States and live with a local host family. I am looking forward to become a part of the family – live together and care for each other. I will be able to experience American life and culture, share my Chinese culture with my host family and the family members. I am not the person who only put all my efforts in studying, instead I have a lot of hobbies. Besides travelling, I also love sports like playing tennis, jogging, swimming and long-distance running, etc. I like music as well. I am good at playing Liuqing, a traditional Chinese instrument. Also, I play viola in our school orchestra. In my leisure time, I watch videos in English or read books in philosophy. I have been to America before and I am really looking forward to studying in a high school and living with a host family. I am sure I can adapt myself to my new life quickly and have a great and memorable time with you in this student exchange program.”

Kevin | Full-time Host Family

Country: South Korea
Gender: Male
Grade: Junior
Interests: rocket engineering, science, cycling, hiking, movies, travel

Kevin writes:  “Hello, my name is Kang. I'm currently living in South Korea. I'm so glad that I could get a chance to spend time abroad and experience life as a student in USA. I'm looking forward to meeting my host family and making new friends. I hope to make the happiest and funniest memories with you. Let me introduce myself a little more deeply. I like outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, or traveling. I do these activities time to time in Korea. Another thing that I like is watching movies. I feel relaxed and comforted when I watch a movie with people that I care about. I would be delighted if you can make some time to watch a movie with me. What is your favorite genre? My favorite subject in school is science. One of the responsibilities I have during the program is introducing Korean cultures. And I'm willing to do it with all my best. We could play traditional Korean games together. Since I was a little, I have always been curious about other countries and different cultures. And I'm excited to get the opportunity to participate in this program. I want you to know that I will do my very best to become a successful exchange student and a wonderful member of your family. I will open my mind and listen to people. Because communication and intimacy are the most important things when it comes to relationships. If I make any mistake, please tell me. I am always ready to fix. A year together will affect each other a lot in a good way. I can't wait to meet you and share some amazing experience with you.”
