Nomination Period Now Open for Elder & Deacon

The nomination period for elders and deacons is now open. This is the time when you, the members of New Life, can have input on who leads our church. One of the responsibilities of church members is to discern, based on the leading of God’s Spirit and the qualifications given to us in Scripture, whom the Lord might be calling to serve in the office of elder or deacon. Between now and March 12, you are invited to submit nominations for these offices.

How do you make a nomination? First, you must be a member of New Life. Then, you should read I Tim. 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 to understand the Biblical qualifications for elder, and I Tim. 3:8-13 and Acts 6:1-6 to understand the Biblical qualifications for deacon. Pray for wisdom from God’s Spirit as you discern whether the person you have in mind is a good candidate. Then, seek permission from the individual before you nominate him (he also must be a member of the church). If he agrees, write his name on one of the nomination forms available at the Welcome Center, and drop it in the wood survey box in at the Welcome Center.

After the nomination period is closed, the elders will review the nominees and approve candidates for an officer training class between April and December. After the class is completed, nominees will be interviewed by the elders again and, if qualified, will then stand for election during our 2018 congregational meeting.

The elder board is currently well staffed (nine men), but the deacons are definitely in need with only four serving currently. So please give special attention to those qualified to serve as deacon.

What is the difference between the office of elder and deacon? Deacons are responsible for maintenance of the church building and grounds, ministering to those in need, and assisting during Sunday morning worship (ushering, collecting offerings). Elders are responsible for spiritual oversight of the church, including discipleship, shepherding, leading in Sunday morning worship (teaching, pastoral prayer and communion) and church discipline. They also develop the church’s strategic plan and work to implement it in the life of the church.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the church office.
